S&amp;P Global compiles the Vietnam PMI<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ihsmarkit.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S&amp;P Global<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">from responses to monthly questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in a panel of around 400 manufacturers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam PMI findings<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29390 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-2026-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Vietnam PMI March 2026\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-2026-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-2026.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The war in the Middle East caused a marked acceleration <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the rate of input cost inflation in the Vietnamese <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">manufacturing sector during March, with selling prices <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">subsequently raised at the fastest pace in almost 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Intensifying price pressures acted to limit demand, and rates <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of growth in both new orders and output slowed as a result. In <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">turn, employment and purchasing activity were scaled back. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, suppliers&#8217; delivery times lengthened substantially. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The impacts of the war also resulted in weaker business <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">confidence, with optimism easing to a six-month low.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The S&amp;P Global Vietnam Manufacturing Purchasing Managers&#8217; <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Index\u2122 (PMI\u00ae) remained above the 50.0 no-change mark in <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">March, extending the current sequence of improving business <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conditions to nine months. That said, the PMI dropped to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">51.2 from February&#8217;s 54.3 and pointed to the least marked <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strengthening of operating conditions since last September. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A key feature of the March PMI survey was the impact of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">war in the Middle East on inflation. An increase in the price of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">oil resulted in higher costs for freight, fuel and transportation. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a result, close to half of respondents recorded an increase <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in their input costs during March, with the pace of inflation the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sharpest since April 2022.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With higher input costs often passed on to customers, output <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">prices increased at one of the sharpest rates since the survey <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">began in 2011. The pace of inflation seen in March was the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">steepest in just under 15 years. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sharply rising prices in the sector acted to limit demand. Total <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">new orders continued to rise as some firms reported that <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">clients had purchased in advance to try to get ahead of price <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">increases. The rate of expansion was only modest, however, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the weakest since last September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, international demand suffered, with new export <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">orders decreasing markedly following stable new business <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from abroad in February. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In line with the picture for total new business, manufacturing <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">production increased at a much-reduced pace during March. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The latest rise in output was the eleventh in as many months, but least pronounced since June 2025.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29391 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-Trend-300x281.jpg\" alt=\"Vietnam PMI March Trend\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-Trend-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Vietnam-PMI-March-Trend.jpg 338w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Slower growth of new orders and higher input costs led to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a reluctance among manufacturers to commit to additional <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">purchases in March. Input buying decreased markedly, ending <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an eight-month sequence of expansion. Stocks of purchases <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were also down.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Where firms did buy inputs, they faced a substantial <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lengthening of suppliers&#8217; delivery times, one that was the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">most pronounced in four years. Respondents indicated that <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">higher fuel costs resulted in transportation delays. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As well as scaling back purchasing activity, manufacturers <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">also signalled a reduction in employment. Staffing levels <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">decreased for the first time in six months. Firms reported <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">difficulties replacing departing staff members, and a drop in <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the number of temporary workers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With employment down and firms facing difficulties securing <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">materials, backlogs of work increased in March. The slight <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">accumulation was the first in four months. In some cases, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">manufacturers used stocks of finished goods to help satisfy <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">order requirements, resulting in a marked fall in post production inventories.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Business confidence dropped to a six-month low in March <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">amid concerns around the impact of the war in the Middle <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">East on international demand, prices and the supply of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">materials. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That said, hopes that underlying demand would remain <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">solid and support growth of new orders and output meant <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that firms on balance continued to predict an increase in <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">production over the coming year.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background\" style=\"background-color: #a6cc17;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cimigo.com\/en\/research-reports\/vietnam-purchasing-managers-index\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download the report here<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The S&amp;P Global Vietnam Manufacturing PMI\u00ae is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to monthly questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in a panel of around 400 manufacturers. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Survey responses are collected by<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cimigo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cimigo\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam in the second half of each month and indicate the direction of change compared to the previous month. A diffusion index is calculated for each survey variable. The index is the sum of the percentage of \u2018higher\u2019 responses and half the percentage of \u2018unchanged\u2019 responses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The indices vary between 0 and 100, with a reading above 50 indicating an overall increase compared to the previous month, and below 50 an overall decrease.
